Visitors and area residents alike will have a new spot to splash and play under the North Carolina mountain's sunny skies this summer with the opening of a new water park at Lake Lure. The Beach Water Works is located on the beach at Lake Lure (26 miles northwest of Greenville, 18 miles southeast of Hendersonville), and features water activities such as bumper boats, water cannons, and water slides that are sure bets to get Water Works participants soaking wet. If a visitor's stop at Lake Lure happens to coincide with a cool or cloudy day, the Beach Water Work's Fun Center will have what it takes to occupy young guests and their families. The Fun Center, scheduled to open in June, will include ping-pong tables, trampolines, mini-golf, foosball and air hockey tables. Also available will be pontoon boat tours that will leave hourly each day beginning at 10AM. These boat tours are an excellent way to view the majestic mountain scenery surrounding Lake Lure that makes it one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. It is also an opportunity to see some of the lovely estates and long-time family lake homes that have made Lake Lure such a popular destination for decades. Dinner cruises, involving a stop a one of the lakefront restaurants, are available in the evening. Canoes, kayaks and one- or two-man hydrobikes are also available for rent. As a local ordinance prevents the use of jet skis on Lake Lure, these are ideal alternatives for those who want the experience the lake a little more quietly and intimately. There is a $5 admission to the Beach Water Works in addition to the $4 admission charge for adults to the beach ($2 for children). Families may stay and swim all day, and there are lifeguards on duty at the swim area. Food concessions and showers are also on site. Lake Lure is located on Highway 64/74A in Hickory Nut Gorge.
