The Spartanburg Stingers, a new Coastal Plain League baseball team, played its opening game June 2 at Historic Duncan Park. The Stingers are still looking for some local folks who are interested in hosting a team member during the league's 2003 summer season. Since players on the team are NCAA student-athletes, none of them can be paid for playing summer college baseball. As a result of this restriction, the Coastal Plain League and leagues like it traditionally rely on local families to host their players. Hosting a college-age player can be a great experience and a lot of fun for families with a young ball player who dreams of one day playing in the "big leagues" himself, or for a retired couple with an extra room and a desire for some energy and a bit of noise around the house again. Host families are only obligated to provide a place to stay, usually a spare bedroom. Players are responsible for their own food, transportation, and laundry, although host families may include their player in family meals and activities if they desire. Several players are also interested in finding part-time employment in the Spartanburg area this summer. General Manager Lenny Mathis says that many of the players are capable of working in offices, retail stores, or recreational facilities (like golf courses), and many have targeted interests pertaining to their majors. The Stingers will play their home schedule in Spartanburg's beautiful and historic Duncan Park. The CPL plays all of their games with wood bats, bringing the traditional "crack of the bat" sound back to one of baseball's most attractive small-town parks. Area families and businesses that are interested in helping these college athletes attain their dreams of baseball success are encouraged to call General Manager Lenny Mathis at 864-591-2250. Season tickets are still on sale. Various flexible ticket options are available, ranging from $25 for a book of 10 undated general admission tickets to $125 (per seat) box seat tickets with top-of-the-action seating somewhere in the first four rows. Please call 864-591-2250 or email [email protected] for more ticket information.
