Spartanburg School District Two will open the new Rainbow Lake Middle School next school year. Veteran principal Donnie Barnette will move from the principalship at Boiling Springs Junior High to take the helm at Rainbow Lake Middle. Penny Atkinson, currently assistant principal for curriculum and instruction at D.R. Hill Middle School, will replace Mr. Barnette at Boiling Springs Junior High effective July 1. Mrs. Atkinson completed her undergraduate studies at Lander University with a B.S. in Elementary Education. She holds a Master's Degree in School Leadership from Furman University. She was a classroom teacher and literacy coach in Laurens District 55 and in Saluda School District. Her first assistant principal position was at Reidville Elementary in Spartanburg District 5. Atkinson is married to Dr. Ashley Atkinson, Jr. and has two daughtersJordan, a freshman at Columbia College, and Ruth, a junior at James F. Byrnes High School. Boiling Springs Junior High held an after-school reception for staff to meet Mrs. Atkinson. Due to the tight schedule for occupying the Rainbow Lake Middle School still under construction, the 2010-11 school year will be one of staggered transition for Rainbow Lake Middle and Boiling Springs Junior High. Both schools will house seventh and eighth grade students next school year. If the new school is not ready for occupancy in time for the first day of school, all seventh and eighth graders will attend Boiling Springs Junior High until a move is feasible. Beginning with the 2011-12 school year, BSJH and RLMS will serve grades six through eight, equalizing the middle school grade structure across the school district and easing growing pains in feeder schools. When the middle school transition is fully implemented in 2011-12, Boiling Springs Intermediate will house fourth graders from Boiling Springs and Hendrix elementary schools and fifth graders from Boiling Springs, Hendrix, Oakland, Carlisle-Fosters Grove, and Cooley Springs-Fingerville (its Boiling Springs High area) elementary school attendance areas. After completing fifth grade at Boiling Springs Intermediate, BSE and HES students will attend middle school at the current Boiling Springs Junior High, and CFG, CSF, and OES students will attend middle school at Rainbow Lake Middle. Students and parents will receive further information through their schools as adjustments are made to accomplish new grade spans at the affected schools. In 2010-11, the only change for students will be seventh and eighth graders in the CFG, CSF (Boiling Springs area), and OES attendance areas going to Rainbow Lake Middle. Elementary school attendance areas will determine middle school placement. District Twos Chesnee High attendance area will not be affected by these changes.
