The popularity that ice hockey has enjoyed since it first showed up on the Greenville sports radar screen several seasons ago is undeniable. Even for those who are newcomers to the sport, the games fast pace and aggressive nature not to mention the fact that it is played on ice, something that remains a novelty for many a Southerner have contributed to the Greenville Grrrowls success with local sports fans. But the Grrowls adaptation to the preferences of Upstate residents has probably had as much to do with the teams marketing success as does the teams record on the ice. The Bark is Back is the teams catch phrase this season, and Byron Rucker, Grrrowl General Manager, has developed a home game promotional schedule that emphasizes the bark is back for Upstate sports fans, whether they are young or old, ice hockey novices or seasoned die-hards, and providing additional bang for the buck with concerts, money-saving ideas, and fun activities that keep fans coming back for more. With recreational ice hockey leagues being such a big draw for kids at Greenville Countys Pavilion ice rink, young fans get plenty of consideration at Grrrowl games. Every Sunday home game is Kids Day with the Grrrowl throughout the season, when kids 12 and under get to sit anywhere in the arena for just $5. Remaining Sunday home games will be played on March 7 (vs. Louisiana), and March 21 (vs. Alaska, a new ECHL team). A great money-saver for hockey-loving families is the Family 4-Pack, back this season by popular demand. Families can purchase four tickets, four hot dogs, and four Pepsi drinks for $40, and have a great night out together in the process. Post-game skates are also part of the fun (subject to change). Saturday home games not only feature great hockey, but the Grrrowl Sound Stage, when fans can enjoy live music from local bands during the pre-game, intermission, and post-game. Upcoming Saturday home games are March 6 vs. Louisiana, when Cedars of Lebanon will perform; March 20 vs. Columbia, when N2U will perform; and March 27 vs. Roanoke, band to be announced. All home games are played at the Bi-Lo Center. There are a number of ways to purchase individual tickets for Grrrowl games. Fans can contact Ticketmaster at 864-233-2525 or 864-576-1550, visit www.ticketmaster.com online, go by any Ticketmaster outlet, or visit the Bi-Lo Center box office.
