Two Fatz Cafes Open in Spartanburg and Greenville at Former J.Jr's Filling Station & Grill Sites

Fatz Cafe opened its third restaurant in Spartanburg at the site of the former J.Jr.s Filling Station & Grill. The opening of the Spartanburg restaurant on Southport Road just off Reidville Road, and the simultaneous opening of a second location in Greenville, bring the total number of locations to 20 in the Southeast for the casual dining concept headquartered in Taylors. Other Spartanburg-area Fatz Cafes include a location on Pottery Road at I-26 and on Highway Nine in Boiling Springs.

Reflecting the latest generation of design for Fatz Cafe, the Spartanburg location offers seating for 225 people, a full-service bar, separate take-out entrance and private banquet room. The dcor features an updated rustic look, including stacked-stone faade and interior wooden beams, complemented with historic photos of the local area. The restaurant will be open for lunch and dinner seven days a week serving generously sized salads, sandwiches and entrees including steaks, seafood and Fatz Cafes World Famous Calabash Chicken.

General Manager Pryor Hovis, who ran the sites former J.J.rs restaurant, will oversee approximately a staff of 95. Management team members for the new Spartanburg location are service managers Ted Nichols and Jason Phillips; kitchen manager Tim Cudd; and assistant kitchen manager Catina Gray.

Cafe Enterprises, Inc., parent company of Fatz Cafe, announced in August that it was converting its two J. Jrs restaurants in Greenville and Spartanburg in order to focus on its core brand. The company has invested $2 million in the conversions.

This move signifies the tremendous confidence we have in the Fatz Cafe concept, said Cafe Enterprises President Bill Burton. J.Jrs was a successful restaurant in its own right, but we expect to enjoy even better performance for our company as a whole by focusing our resources behind Fatz Cafe.

Burton noted the recent growth and success of Fatz Cafe as a key element in the conversion decision. According to Restaurant Hospitality, Fatz Cafe was the nations 28th fastest-growing restaurant concept and the third fastest growing of its kind in 2002, with sales up 24 percent. The trend is continuing in 2003, with total revenues up 23.4% and same store sales up 9.5% through October.

The success has continued into 2003, with Fatz Cafe opening additional restaurants in Irmo, S.C., and Greeneville, Tenn., in the first half of the year. In addition to the two conversions, the company will open a new Fatz Cafe in Florence, S.C. in December and expects to open two more Fatz Cafe locations in the first quarter of 2004.
