Dorman did it last year. This year, Doc Davis' Spartanburg Vikings pulled off a 24-21 overtime victory against Northwestern High School to keep the State 4-A Football Championship in Spartanburg for another year. The game, played at USC's Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, was a nail-biter for Viking fans, with the team down 14 points before coming back to tie the game at the end of regulation. This state title is the fifth for the school in the past ten years, the sixth overall, with the first title coming in 1932. Under Doc Davis' direction, Spartanburg has won state championship titles in 1991, '94, '95 and '96, in addition to the title won this year. Jared Clifford, Spartanburg's field goal kicker, won the game in overtime with a powerful boot through the uprights on first down. The 5'-11", 160-pound soccer player was mobbed by his teammates as the game was decided with the ball sailing cleanly through the air. As glorious as Spartanburg's win feels, Union High School felt the other side, with the sting of a loss in a hard-fought game against Camden, losing in overtime, also by a score of 24-21. Union's junior receiver Charles Brandon was barely caught at the ankles by Camden's Bruce Lee at the two-yard line with time expired on the overtime clock, ending Union's phenomenal attempt at a comeback in a game that resembled a battle much more than an athletic event. Congratulations to Spartanburg High School for their 4-A State Football Championship, and congratulations to Union High School for their second place finish. Both schools have football programs of which they can be very proud! (Top logo provided by Spartanburg High School, Union High logo provided by Union High)
