Upstate Forever Presents “Traditional Neighborhood Development for Small Towns and Rural Communities”

Local conservation group Upstate Forever, in partnership with the Town of Lyman, is hosting Traditional Neighborhood Development for Small Towns and Rural Communities, an after-work program and discussion forum on Thursday, December 4, from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m.

Keynote speakers Pat Dilger and Don Godbey will introduce the concept of Traditional Neighborhood Development (TND) as a planning tool to accommodate population growth and support economic development in ways that enhance overall quality of life in small towns and rural communities. Dilger is an urban designer with Overbrook Studios LLC, and Godbey, former mayor of Mauldin, serves on the board of the Appalachian Council of Governments and chairs its Economic Development Committee.

“This event is designed to engage and inform decision-makers about an important tool that can help shape built environments that strengthen local economies in smaller communities,” said Sherry Barrett, Upstate Forever Program Associate. “We’re drawing upon a team of local experts to share their knowledge and expertise in the realm of Traditional Neighborhood Development from the perspectives of both community design and economic development.”

The event will begin with registration and a reception at 5:30 p.m. at Pacific Place at the Lyman Event Center, located at 59 Groce Road, Lyman. The keynote presentation will start at 6:00 p.m., followed by a panel discussion and questions from the audience. In addition to the keynote presenters, panelists will include a home builder, residential developer, community planner, and transportation planner.

This event is the fourth in Upstate Forever’s 2014 Active Living Event Series, based in Spartanburg County and sponsored by the Mary Black Foundation. The Series is designed to encourage community dialogue about policies and infrastructure that promote active, healthy communities.
