January Interim Gives Wofford Students Chance for New Experiences

The 2013 January Interim, which begins on Thursday, January 3, provides Wofford College students with a myriad of opportunities for non-traditional study, internships and travel.

Interim is Wofford’s month-long academic program designed to foster hands-on, non-traditional and experiential learning.

On-campus courses cover anything from college basketball, the Arab Spring, and training to become a certified medical first responder to investigating the assassination of JFK; from learning about the professional wrestling industry, rock climbing and yoga, and “exploring virtual worlds” to The Beatles, discovering your ancestry, and creating street art with graffiti, knitting, being an amateur architect, and becoming a connoisseur of luxury goods such as chocolate, wine, and cheese. For a full list of on-campus Interim courses, go to http://webs.wofford.edu/webdocs/courseSchedule201301.pdf.

Students may elect to use Interim to travel around the globe with faculty members as guides, participate in an off-campus internship, or conduct an independent study project individually or in a small group.

Independent study projects include a variety of medical, dental and veterinary internships as well as projects developed by individual students or small groups of students. Examples include a student doing nursing research at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital; a senior who will complete 200 hours of training in Baja, Mexico, to become a certified yoga instructor; a junior who will intern with the Carolina Panthers; a student who will write, record and engineer a full length record; a football athlete who will work on a pre-ministerial service project with the help of Chaplain Ron Robinson; a Rwandan Presidential Scholar, who fled the genocide as a child, who will pursue a pre-pharmacy internship with hopes of returning one day to help her country through her education; and two students who will spend January “appreciating the poetry of James Dickey using an iPad app.”

Travel Interims include trips to Japan, Belize, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Peru, Thailand, South Africa and France.

Interim 2013 ends on Wednesday, Jan. 30, with spring semester classes beginning on Monday, Feb. 4.
