Artists’ Guild of Spartanburg will spotlight member Pearla Moler for the month of January, hosting the exhibit “20 Years in the Making” in its gallery at Chapman Cultural Center.
The public can view the non-representational paintings Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays, 1-5 p.m. at no charge.
The exhibit closes Jan. 31.
Moler is a Montana artist currently residing in Spartanburg. “Painting for me is all very simple. I paint. I do it nearly every day because I love the alchemy of changing colors,” she said. “I lay a brush stroke or push pigment around and move color until I am either pleased with the result and move on to the next work, or until I can’t stand the result and move on to the next work. It is that elementary. I paint. People will surely ask what my paintings mean, or what they are supposed to feel, or what they represent. My paintings are about paint. However, people have stated they see different things in these works; an indication they’re using their imagination to find a connection to the shapes, colors and textures. This experience might best be described as abstract matrixing, but my process is not to direct that experience. The works are simply about paint. Sometimes people may feel that I am being difficult and unwilling to elaborate; but the truth is that I simply paint, nothing more. I like what Andy Warhol said in a 1960’s filmed interview. When asked repeatedly questions about his art, he would respond that he didn’t know. Seeing that the interviewer was getting irritated, he leaned to the side and said to interviewer, ‘If you give me the answers, I will repeat them for you.’ If you need more of me, just give me the answers and I will repeat them. I don’t want you to be angry, but the reality for me is, I paint.”
