Two public and free drum circles will be held at Chapman Cultural Center Saturday, Sept. 27, as part of the Hub City Empty Bowls Soup Day.
The public is invited to participate at either or both sessions: 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. A few drums will be provided, but participants are highly encouraged to bring their own drums or other percussion musical instruments. All types of drums are welcome. The sessions will be lead by drum circle extraordinaire Melisa Emkjer.
The drum circles are part of the many features of Soup Day, which is a fundraiser to help feed local hungry citizens. This is the sixth year that Hub City Empty Bowls has hosted an annual fundraiser for an established local charity that provides food to local needy citizens. Soup Day starts at 11 a.m. and ends at 6 p.m. The public is invited to eat the soup, enjoy the music, and keep their handmade pottery soup bowls.
For the past several months, the Carolina Clay Artists, a group of local potters, has coordinated public bowl-making events, where citizens could at no cost make handmade pottery bowls. Those finished bowls will be available on Soup Day for a $15 donation each. In addition to keeping the bowls of your choice, patrons will also enjoy a variety of gourmet soups, bread, and tea, provided by 27 local restaurants.
This year’s beneficiary organization is TOTAL Ministries. Proceeds will be directed to the Hub City Empty Bowls Project Fund, a component fund of The Spartanburg County Foundation, established to increase awareness about the issues of hunger and food security, and to raise funds to help local organizations fight hunger.
In addition, live music will be performed throughout the day. Mark Miller of Wheresville Productions is in charge of the event’s entertainment. Here is the line-up…
