Council Gives Go-ahead for Stewart Park Activity Center

In around four months, Stewart Park in the Highland area will add an activity center to its list of amenities after City Council approved a bid to construct the 3,000 sq. ft. facility at their meeting on Monday.

Clayton Construction was the low bidder for the project at $438,000, with funding coming through the City’s $2.5 million parks improvment plan passed last year.

Once completed, the activity center will provide a flexible space to be used for exercise, crafts, educational, and other community purposes. The new facility is the latest improvement to the park, which received a $1.7 million in 2012, one of the largest park investments in the city’s history.

Also at last night’s meeting, Council gave approval to a planned strategic study of the City’s police and fire services. City Manager Ed Memmott said the study will focus on improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the City’s Police and Fire Departments and will help the City get the best results from money spent on those services. Police and fire services account for nearly half of all City expenditures and more than half of City staff members. Management Partners, a consulting firm specialized in helping government organizations improve operations, was awarded a contract to conduct the study for $76,990.
