At their meeting on Monday, Spartanburg City Council approved its annual street resurfacing plan for fiscal year 2014-2015.
Funding for the $733,271 resurfacing plan comes in the form of $350,000 from the Spartanburg County Transportation Committee and $383,271 from the Spartanburg County Road Fee. You can view the full list of city streets to be repaved by clicking here.
Council also voted 6-0 (Council member Cate Ryba was absent) to grant a special tax abatement for 154 Magnolia Street. The building, owned by an entity of Johnson Development, serves as the corporate training facility for fitness studio chain, Pure Barre. In all, the company has spent close to $1 million purchasing and renovating the building. Under the agreement, the property will be assessed at fair market value before improvements for five years.
Also at Monday’s meeting, Council voted 6-0 to approve a plan changing the way the City allocates its federal Housing and Urban Development CDBG grant funding. Currently, the City has $331,000 in prior year CDBG (Community Development Block Grant) funding. Of that funding, $200,000 will be allocated to the demolition of theSunshine Inn on N. Church Street with another $100,000 going to demolition of dilapidated structures in the city. The remaining $31,000 would be spent on financial literacy classes for low income residents and professional services related to the demolitions.
The way the City handle’s next fiscal year’s CDBG and Home grant funding will be changing as well. A total of $241,000 will be allocated for demolition through June 2015, allowing up to 25 dilapidated structures to be demolished. Additionally, $128,405 will be allocated to the Forest Park Redevelopment Project, and $70,000 will be set aside for the City to award to outside public service organizations.
