Chapman Cultural Center Announces August 2014 Events

Chapman Cultural Center in downtown Spartanburg, the lead arts agency for Spartanburg County, announces all August 2014 events in the visual and performing arts, science, and history.

History Exhibit: Maps Alive!: Aug. 1-31
Spartanburg Regional History Museum is currently exhibiting Maps Alive!, a collection of historic and artistic maps of Spartanburg, South Carolina, and the surrounding area, provided by local volunteer and map enthusiast Ron Swain. Art Exhibit: COLORS: Aug. 1-15
Spartanburg Art Museum is showcasing more than 50 works of art for this annual exhibition. All works were created by COLORS students from across the County at seven sites during the past school year. As an outreach program of SAM, COLORS provides underserved youth a creative outlet to work with artists after school in a safe and supportive environment. Exhibition on view through Aug. 15. Art Exhibit: For the Love of Light: Aug. 1-28
Artists’ Guild of Spartanburg will host Two Photographers: For the Love of Light, a photo exhibit by members Terry Davenport and Skip Woodward, Aug. 1-28. Art Exhibit: Daniel Cromer: A Retrospective: Aug. 1 – Sept. 27
Spartanburg Art Museum is exhibiting impressive watercolors by Daniel Cromer who, after living and working in New York and London as a successful commercial artist, returned to his Spartanburg roots to devote his time and talents to creative practice. His watercolor landscapes and portraits are immediately recognizable, and are in corporate and private collections across the Southeast. This expanse of A Retrospective illustrates the depth of Cromer’s talents and his love for painting. Music Mosaic Concert: Aug. 3
Chapman Cultural Center hosts the annual Music Mosaic concert on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2-5 p.m. in Chapman Cultural Center’s theater. Performing on stage will be talented local musicians who have played all over the Upstate, including Jeremy Willis, Kylie O, Not Even Brothers, Anna V, Barleycove, Rohn Jewell, and Nick Evangelista. Every Sunday afternoon, 1-5 p.m., Chapman Cultural Center is open for the public’s relaxed enjoyment. In addition to visiting Spartanburg Art Museum, Artists’ Guild of Spartanburg Gallery, Spartanburg Regional History Museum, Spartanburg Science Center, and the Student Galleries, a local musician provides free live music 2-4 p.m. This is a wonderful way to kick back and de-stress in a culturally enlightening environment. Opening Reception for Daniel Cromer: A Retrospective: Aug. 9

It will celebrate the incredible talents of Cromer and his 60 years as a practicing artist. SAM’s Family Programming: Watercolor Landscapes: Aug. 10
Spartanburg Art Museum (SAM) will host one of its Family Programs, Watercolor Landscapes, on Sunday, Aug. 10, 1-4 p.m. at Chapman Cultural Center. This will be in association with the current exhibit by artist Daniel Cromer, who is showing watercolors of his favorite places, from downtown Spartanburg to the rural landscapes outside of London. History Lunch & Learn: Aug. 15
Spartanburg County Historical Association will host a public Lunch & Learn lecture about 18th century food on Friday, Aug. 15, 12:30-1:30 p.m. at Chapman Cultural Center. The speaker will be Tim Foster, gardener at Walnut Grove Plantation, and he will present a virtual tour of the Plantation’s garden as he discusses the cultural significance of 18th century food in the modern world. Pinkalicious Audition Workshop: Aug. 16
Spartanburg Youth Theatre will hold an audition workshop at Chapman Cultural Center on Saturday, Aug. 16, 9 a.m.-12 p.m., for its upcoming musical Pinkalicious. Participants must be in grades 3-12. Empty Bowls: Aug. 16
Hub City Empty Bowls will host its fourth out of five bowl-making sessions at Chapman Cultural Center on Saturday, Aug. 16, 10 a.m.-noon and 1-3 p.m. The public is invited to make handmade pottery bowls at no charge. Professional-grade clay and instruction will be provided. The bowls will be used on Saturday, Sept. 27 – Soup Day – at Chapman Cultural Center to raise money for TOTAL Ministries in its efforts to fight hunger in Spartanburg. Pinkalicious Auditions: Aug. 18, 19
Spartanburg Youth Theatre will hold auditions for Pinkalicious the musical on Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 18 and 19, 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the theater at Chapman Cultural Center. ArtWalk: Aug. 21
On the third Thursday of each month, art museums and galleries in Spartanburg stay open late – 5-9 p.m. – so patrons can see what is new on the local art scene. On Thursday, Aug. 21, Chapman Cultural Center will have several venues open to the public: Spartanburg Art Museum, Artists’ Guild of Spartanburg Gallery, Spartanburg Regional History Museum, and the Student Galleries. Community Grant Applications Due: Aug. 22

Deadline for Juried Artists: Aug. 22
Carolina Foothills Artisan Center (CFAC) juries new artists into its retail and gallery space twice a year. The next deadline to apply to be a juried artist with the Center is Friday, Aug. 22. Militia Day: Aug. 23
Spartanburg County Historical Association will sponsor Militia Day at Walnut Grove Plantation on Saturday, Aug. 23, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Join the South Carolina Independent Rangers for a day celebrating military history! Exploring The Dark Corner: Aug. 27
Spartanburg County Historical Association and author Dean Campbell will tell the story of Spartanburg’s legendary Dark Corner, Wednesday, Aug. 27. Participants will meet at and leave from Chapman Cultural Center at 9 a.m. for a full day of fun, information, and lunch on-site of the Dark Corner.
