Football powerhouse James F. Byrnes High School closed out its remarkable 2002 season and defeated the Conway Tigers 34-28 to capture the South Carolina 4A State Championship on Saturday in Columbia. The Byrnes Rebels overpowered and outplayed Conway in the first half, but Conway staged a strong comeback and refused to give up until the final whistle was blown, giving Byrnes' large crowd of football-loving fans good cause to stay glued to their seats throughout the game. The Byrnes offense was relentless in its pursuit of the championship. Byrnes' quarterback Justin Fulbright and receiver Bradley Robinson were good for three touchdowns in the first half. The Rebels offense finished with 373 yards to Conway's 243. The Rebels defense was equally impressive, squelching a Conway second half rally before it could gain momentum. Finishing the season with an outstanding 14-1 record, Byrnes' state title is the first for the school since 1986. The school has a long tradition of football excellence, having previously won 3A titles in 1976 and 1982. Spartanburg.com sends its heartiest congratulations to the Byrnes High School football team, coaches, students, teachers, administrators, parents, and community supporters for a great season and a job well done!
