Three Steps for Being Prepared for Emergencies

The possibility of public health emergencies arising in the United States concerns many people in the wake of recent hurricanes, tsunamis, and the threat of pandemic influenza.

Though some people feel it is impossible to be prepared for unexpected events, taking actions to be prepared helps people deal with all sorts of disasters more effectively when they do occur.

There are 3 easy steps you can take now to protect you and your loved ones:

  1. Build a Kit
  2. Make a Plan
  3. Be Informed

If disaster strikes our community, you might not have access to food, water, or electricity for some time. By taking time now to prepare, you can provide for your entire family. A disaster supplies kit is a collection of basic items that might be needed in the event of an emergency.

Assemble the following items to create kits for use at home, the office, at school and/or in a vehicle. Remember to consider the needs of all family members when adding supplies to your kit. And don’t forget to prepare for your pets and service animals.

  • Water – one gallon per person, per day (3 day supply for evacuation, 2 week supply for home)
  • Food – non-perishable, easy-to-prepare items (3 day supply for evacuation, 2 week supply for home)
  • Flashlight
  • Battery-powered or hand-crank radio (NOAA Weather Radio, if possible)
  • Extra batteries for flashlight and radio
  • First aid kit
